Padmavati is an upcoming epic period based film by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, which is based on a epic poem “Padmavat” written by Malik Muhammad Jayasi.
It is a tale of love, betrayal, obsession, pride and sacrifice.
This was surfaced 230 years later, after Khilji took over Chittorgarh, and so, there is a big conflict on its true existence.
Padmavati – An imagination of sufi poet Jayasi or a historical figure?
Eminent historians like Irfan Habib, clearly mentioned that Padmavati is an imaginary character. Amir Khusrau, who was present with Alauddin during the Chittor siege 1303, didn’t mention about any Padmavati(or Padmini) in his work Khaza’in ul-Futuh(The Treasures of Victory). This work is a recording of the reign of Alauddin Khalji, wars and administrative services. Khusrau has authored numerous historical literature during the era of Alauddin and nowhere Padmavati was mentioned. Jayasi himself wrote this in Padmavat as last line “I have made the story and related it”.
But certain groups of historians who believe that the queen was a real-life person. As per Historian Krishna Gopal Sharma, Padmini(Padmavati) was the 15th wife of Rawal Ratan Singh. She was from present day Sri Lanka and Mahraja Ratan Singh married her in a Swayamwvar.
So this controversy with history vs myth is not going to end soon. The Union I&B ministry wrote a letter to HRD ministry regrading suggestions on some of the eminent historian. A panel of historian will be included into CBFC panel to review padmavati before giving clearance.
Jayasi’s epic – Padmavat
This poem decribed the fearlessness and sacrifice of Rani Padmini. When the Rajput men were in the verse of demolition and there defeat was inevitable against the Khaljis, she alongwith other women of Chittorgarh followed a secret passage inside Chittor Fort to Jauhar Kund for self immolation.
Present day conflict over Padmavati
Variant hurdles have crippled from the very beginning of the shoot of Bhansali’s film “Padmavati”.
He was attacked by Shree Rajput Karni Sena and his set was also vandalized in Jaipur.
The actions of Karni Sena has raised question to India’s democracy which stands by freedom of speech and freedom of expression.
They not only attacked Bhansali and ruined the sets of Padmavati in Jaipur, they went ahead to vandalized theatres in Kota, Rajasthan.
And it didn’t stop here, a BJP leader Suraj Pal Amu from Haryana announced 10 crore bounty to behead Deepika & Sajay Leela Bhansali. He said
“I want to congratulate the Meerut youth who announced Rs 5-crore bounty for beheading Deepika Padukone and Sanjay Leela Bhansali, We will double the amount and reward Rs 10 crore those who behead them and also take care of their family’s needs.”
This a threat to our nation how a fringe group is causing a danger to India’s unity and their fundamental rights.
Recently Bengal’s CM Mamata Banerjee came forward to show her support for Padmavati and also welcomed Bhansali and his team to show case his movie in Bengal and assured full protection and security from her side.
Isn’t it shocking to see, after 71 years of independence, India is still being dominated by a section of goons who consider themselves to be the defender of India’s culture and heritage.
The members of Karni Sena who are creating storm to protest the release of Padmavati in order to preserve the pride of Rani Padmini and protect the dignity of Rajputs, are themselves promoting violence by attacking theatres which could have had common people present there.
And the amusing part of this whole chaos, is the story behind the origin of these controversies, is just the clash of illusionary egos.
Lokendra Singh Kalvi, one of the leader of Karni Sena said, it all began with a rather superficial statement made by Ranveer Singh, where he stated he wouldn’t mind playing a villain like Khilji if he is given scenes with the leading lady. This could have been just a mere statement by Singh for his equation with Deepika.
But, this created a rage in Rajput community, without the movie screening they came into conclusion of the movie having intimate scenes between Khilji and Padmini and so they went forward to ban the movie.
I wonder where is India’s democracy heading to!!
India’s freedom is threatened and it is strange to see how the freedom of speech and freedom of expression is restrained by a small section of community who are Indians themselves. These groups are impairing the nation’s peace for some silly speculation on an epic drama.
The most shocking jesture is coming up from our government, who are not taking any action on these goons who are openly spreading violence on the name of Indian culture and heritage.
However, Smriti Irani from the ruling party and member of Rajya Sabha, has assured that the film will face no trouble during its release and the state government will ensure law and order and not allow any miscreants to disrupt any kind of interaction or display of this film.
But, our question is why any legal action is not getting charged on these people who are creating such nonsense and also openly accepting it.
Despite of many explanations and assurance by Sanjay Leela Bhansali they continued there protest.
The film got banned in 3 states of India, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and now Bihar.
After such rigid aversion towards this film release, the entire film fraternity have come together in Mumbai to support Sanjay Leela Bhansali and protest against the Karni Sena who are trying to dominate the freedom of artist.
“I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited.Imagination encircles the world.”
– Albert Einstein
Only CBFC has the right to scrutinize the film suitability for public view. It’s strange how a section of ignorant people are creating violence openly and government is still acting indifferently towards it.
“Nothing tastes more bitter than the truth”
And the truth is we live in a nation where every second women safety is at stake.
Every other day women is victimized, assaulted, raped but we hear no voice from any community. According to National Crime Records Bureau, Rajasthan reports third highest number of crime against women, in cases like rape, harassment, abduction, domestic violence.
The people who are now protesting against a film which can wash off the pride of “Rani Padmini” and their dignified culture, are they doing enough to conserve the dignity of women living with them!!
Where is there power and rage when in every 15 seconds, a woman is suffering violence and harassment in their own state.
This has totally left me flabbergasted how this curator of Rani Padmini, whose existence is still questionable, is slamming and threatening another women (Deepika Padukone) who is in “real”, and terrorizing the nation, curbing its freedom.
Rather than the sadism over such illusionary issues these senas can re-educate themselves on what Indian heritage and culture truly means and how to preserve their heritage and culture by not crucifying India’s Freedom.
